By sunrise of the following morning, Pompeji is buried under ash and lava. When the citizens of Pompeji begin their daily work on August 24, they have no inkling of the imminent catastrophe. The fear of the volcano has long since been forgotten. Over the past years, numerous Roman citizens, famous gladiators and rich Patricians have returned to the city, moving into the new and splendid buildings in the shadow of the Vesuvius. Pompeji's development into an important trade city has reached its peak. Those who remain behind begin to rebuild Pompeji.
